The Jaguar Cars Maths in Motion Challenge has now become well established in the calendars of many schools as a way of engaging children of all ages in an exciting and motivating mathematics based project. The software is suitable for all ages from 9 upwards. It is an ideal base for a primary school maths project, for a 'transition years' project and is also suitable for use with KS4 students.
The Challenge involves students working together in small teams, who compete against each other in an effort to win a Grand Prix type race and become U.K. Champions. This activity involves using a wide variety of basic mathematical skills ranging from the measurement of angles and scale to the use of percentages and higher level key skills (see fuller list on Homepage).
Who can take part?
The 2008/09 Challenge is now open to any school in the U.K.
What are the age ranges?
There are three age ranges in the 2008/09 Challenge, as shown below (all as at 30th September 2008):
Age Range 1: Any child of Primary School age (excluding P7 in Scotland)
Age Range 2: Any child in years 7, 8 and 9, P7, S1 and S2
Age Range 3: Any child in years 10 and 11, S3 and S4
How does it work?
A participating school will need to purchase the required software, direct from Cambridgeshire Software House, (promotional copies do not qualify to take part) and this will be supplied at special 'Challenge' discounted rates. In return for being able to purchase the software at the discounted price, schools will be expected to submit an entry into the Challenge i.e. should a school not send an entry, the organisers reserve the right to invoice the school for the difference between the discounted price and the full published price of the software. Contact info@mathschallenge.org.uk for details.
Each participating school will run a series of internal races to find its own winner who will then take part in a Regional Heat, based on Local Authority boundaries, via email. All Regional Heat winners will then race in a knockout round via email to determine which schools are invited to take part in the National Final. As mentioned, the Heats will be organised and run by us using email, unless an LEA/CLC organises it's own event locally.
The 2008/9 Challenge will be based on Version 10 of the 'Cars Maths in Motion' software, published in May 2008. It is intended to hold the National Final at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon, Warwickshire at the end of June 2009.
